Multiple Fatality Incidents

Multiple casualty incidents often require the component of dental identification.  Often times human remains resulting from such tragedies are highly fragmented, burned or decomposed to the point that dental identification is not only the most expedient method of identification but the only feasible method. The local jurisdiction responsible for the disaster may not have the forensic dentists or expertise to deal with the dental identification of multiple fragmented remains.  Even in those situations where a forensic dental ID team is available, or when a federal DMORT team may be involved, there still may be a need for an experienced odontologist to manage or consult in the dental ID procedures.

Dental Forensics offers on or off-site assistance in the management of mass disaster dental identification:

  • Ante-mortem dental records collection, and the preparation of composite ante-mortem dental charts, digitalization of x-rays and photographs, and the building of ante-mortem records database into WinID3 computer comparison software.  (WinID3 is a Windows based software program used to facilitate the comparison of ante and post-mortem records).
  • Post-mortem dental examination including x-rays, photographs and charting, and the construction of the postmortem records database in WinID3.
  • Comparison of ante-mortem and post-mortem data to make the identifications.

Dr. Loomis also offers training in mass disaster dental management using mock disaster scenarios with specimens and the WinID3 software.
